We know the entire human genetic structure, we understand<strong>\u00a0bacteria and viruses<\/strong>\u00a0and we no longer believe in magic potions. What possible use could there be for\u00a0<strong>herbs<\/strong>\u00a0in the modern world?This is a question that strikes a lot of us when confronted, time and time again, with\u00a0<strong>\u2018herbs\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0and \u2018natural medicine\u2019 in the media. As a\u00a0<strong>vet<\/strong>\u00a0working in practice, seeing large and small animals, I used to think this as well. But I\u2019ve been studying\u00a0<strong>herbs<\/strong>\u00a0for years now and I\u2019d like to tell you a bit about what I\u2019ve discovered.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Herbs<\/strong>\u00a0were on the planet before us. If you think about it, when we were mudskippers just venturing out of the primitive oceans what else would we eat? Terrestrial plants provided food, but they also provided essential chemicals we needed for health \u2013\u00a0<strong>vitamins, antioxidants and minerals<\/strong>, for example. But plants provide so much more as well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Herbs<\/strong>\u00a0contain countless chemicals. These can be isolated to make new drugs \u2013\u00a0<strong>Permethrins<\/strong>, derived from\u00a0<strong><em>Crysanthemum<\/em><\/strong>, used in<strong>\u00a0insecticides<\/strong>;\u00a0<strong>Periwinkle<\/strong>, or<strong>\u00a0Vinca<\/strong>, used to make the potent\u00a0<strong>chemotherapy<\/strong>\u00a0agent<strong>\u00a0Vincristine<\/strong>\u00a0or the toxic drug atropine derived from\u00a0<strong><em>Atropa belladonna<\/em>, Deadly Nightshade<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the natural state, however, most\u00a0<strong>herbs<\/strong>\u00a0are<strong>\u00a0non toxic<\/strong>, unlike some refined drug derivatives. Medicinal plants\/herbs contain tempering, balancing and complementary chemical families that moderate toxicity and can even mutually enhance therapeutic effects.<\/li>\n<li>A century ago all\u00a0<strong>vets<\/strong>\u00a0were making up herbal pills and unction\u2019s for their patients. This practice died as drugs took over; not because drugs were better necessarily, but because they were easily manufactured, controlled and immediate effects were easy to measure. We can now see, though, that drugs do not give us all the health answers.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Drugs are incredibly helpful. Equally, there are problems with taking a\u00a0<em>wholly<\/em>\u00a0pharmaceutical approach to animal health, be it livestock, equine or small animal.Modern\u00a0<strong>veterinary herbal medicine<\/strong>\u00a0is in its infancy in the UK. We\u2019re just beginning to find our feet again. The newly formed\u00a0<strong>British Association of Veterinary Herbalists<\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.herbalvets.org.uk\/\">www.herbalvets.org.uk<\/a>) is testament to this.
